For businesses, understanding product authenticity and traceability is key to maintaining quality and consumer trust. That’s where certifications like Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Geographical Indication (GI) status come in. When Rooibos received PDO status in 2021, it became the first African food product to be recognised under the EU’s Geographical Indications framework. But what does this mean for your brand and why should you care?
What Is PDO and GI Status?
PDO and GI status are certifications that protect and recognise products linked to specific geographical areas. These designations ensure that only products grown and processed within a defined region can bear the name associated with that product. For Rooibos tea, this means that only Rooibos grown in designated areas of South Africa’s Western and Northern Cape provinces can be labelled as such.
In May 2021, Rooibos became the first African food to receive geographical indication (GI) status under Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012, granting it PDO recognition. This certification guarantees that when you purchase Rooibos with PDO status, you are getting a product that is authentic, sustainably sourced, and of the highest quality.
The Only Place in the World for Authentic Rooibos
Rooibos can only be grown in 16 regions within South Africa’s Western and Northern Cape. Carmién Tea is based in this unique region, which spans 60,000 hectares, ensuring that we source Rooibos directly from the farm to your cup.
Our farms are strategically spread across these designated areas, and through our long-term contracted producers, we secure Rooibos from all the specified regions. This provides you with a diverse and consistent supply of high-quality Rooibos.
