An innovative range of Rooibos teas for women

As we near the end of Women’s Month, we realise afresh how far a simple cup of tea has come. Gone are the days when the only option was a classic cup of rooibos tea with either honey or with milk and sugar. The rooibos tea offering has expanded into flavoured blends, wellness blends, kiddies blends, iced teas, and cold brews and now a new breed of highly beneficial, functional blends are at the forefront of new developments aimed to ‘treat’ very specific health ailments or needs.

Carmién Tea has attracted the attention of its ever-growing tea-drinking fans, not just by developing recipes that make its rooibos blends an essential part of a spice cupboard, but by specifically developing teas suited to the needs of women. For many, these blends are almost a replacement for their traditional script at the chemist.

Why? Targeted ingredients combined with rooibos provide potent health-boosting, daily drinks, specifically Carmién Nursing and Meno. If you are a woman, Carmién Meno is the tea for you. Meno is a functional rooibos blend with a delicious raspberry flavour for all stages of womanhood, from becoming a woman to motherhood to menopause and beyond. This blend is developed to:

  • ease menstrual cramps and mood swings
  • relieve menopausal symptoms
  • relieve hot flushes and night sweats
  • and provides overall menopausal support

Ingredients include typical plant-based herbs used for estrogen-related conditions such as black cohosh and red raspberry leaf. Superfood moringa and ginseng add additional health boost. Worth noting are the benefits of raspberry leaf and ginseng.

Red Raspberry leaf has been used medicinally for thousands of years, including amongst indigenous Australian cultures. The leaves contain a rich assortment of vitamins including vitamin B complex, calcium, iron, magnesium and fragrarine. Across the world, red raspberry leaf is used to treat flu, diarrhoea and acne. It is used to lower the blood sugar of diabetic women, regulate irregular menstrual cycles, decrease heavy periods and lower blood pressure.

When taken during pregnancy, red raspberry leaf is said to aid the mother’s immune system, ease morning sickness and promote better circulation. Taking raspberry leaf is believed to help strengthen uterine muscles and tone the pelvic floor in preparation for childbirth, as well as assist with breastmilk supply. Studies have shown that women who take red raspberry leaf have a reduced incidence of birth interventions. Research has also found that women who drink red raspberry leaf tea regularly towards the end of their pregnancies had shorter second stages of labour than those who don’t.

Like rooibos, ginseng is anti-inflammatory, boosts the immune system, helps with weight loss and is anti-carcinogenic. It is also known for improving mood and stress relief, lowering blood sugar levels and improving brain and lung function.

Carmién Nursing tea has long been a firm favourite with breastfeeding moms as insufficient breast milk supply is a common problem, especially as the percentage of women choosing to breastfeed has increased to more than 90% in the last decade. The National Health Survey conducted in 2001 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics [11] revealed that the most common self-reported reason for discontinuation of breastfeeding was inadequate breast milk supply (30%), followed by a feeling that it was time to stop (23%), breastfeeding-related problems such as cracked nipples (10%), and having to return to work (8%).

In line with several studies on the use of galactagogues for breastfeeding, this plant-based blend is specially formulated to stimulate and increase lactation. The combination of traditional plants, fenugreek, fennel and aniseed work together to increase milk production while rooibos is caffeine, sugar and kilojoule free, will assist in weight loss post pregnancy and is calming for both mother and infant.

Newborns often have tummy upsets, excess wind, sore stomachs and gripey pain. Carminative plants like fennel and aniseed are high in volatile oils which can help reduce the incidence of reflux, colic or stomach upsets.

The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding as an economic and valuable method for protecting infants’ health during life. It provides unique biological and emotional effects for both mother and infant. Malnutrition in the first year of life causes two-thirds of deaths worldwide in children under 5 years. Breastfeeding strengthens the infant’s immune system and decreases the risk of mortality by up to 20%. Breastfeeding also causes a quicker return to pre-pregnancy weight, decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, post-delivery depression and breast and ovarian cancer. (Read more here).
